Echizen ceramics
Echizen tiles have long been produced in the Echizen area, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan.
Tiles” are usually found on roofs and are never touched. They are a durable roofing material that can withstand the harsh natural environment, but they are produced from natural soil. At Echizen Ceramica, visitors can touch the clay from which the tiles are made and create their own original miniature tiles. Visitors can enjoy making their own original designs, or use a mold to make their own.
The roof tile production process is also open to the public. The sound and heat of the factory’s large machinery, including automatic presses and tunnel kilns firing at around 1,200 degrees Celsius, are both powerful and impressive.
After the tour, visitors can try their hand at breaking roof tiles. Dojis are also available for rent, so you can feel like a karate expert and have some real fun.
