According to tradition, Echizen washi originated 1,500 years ago, when Emperor Tsugitai was in Echizen, a goddess appeared upstream from a river in the Okata area and taught the villagers the art of papermaking, which was the beginning of washi making.
Today, the delicate and beautiful Echizen washi is enjoyed by many people. Visitors can also experience the production of washi at the Papyrus Museum and other facilities.
